May 2009 The New York Insurance Department, in consultation with the New York Office of Mental Health, reviewed the cost effectiveness of a mental health parity law known as "Timothy's law." The agencies reviewed industry-wide statistics and a detailed claims/cost analysis. The law was slated to sunset December 31, 2009. The study found that the law expanded coverage for mental health services at a minimal cost, only $1.04 per member per month more than employees existing coverage . . .
