California Receiver’s Motion to Hold Defendants in Contempt & Compel Prison Medical Funding

August 13, 2008 California Prison Receiver filed a motion asking the federal courts to order the state to provide $8 billion for inmate care; the court agreed and has fined the state until it provides funding for the Receivers projects. The $8 billion will be used to build seven 1,500-bed long-term care facilities to bring state prison medical care into constitutional compliance. The funding will also be used to upgrade medical, dental, and mental health care facilities and improve disability access in all 33 state prisons.
