September, 2009 As the lead Federal agency for research on mental and behavioral disorders, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) envisions a world in which mental illnesses are prevented and cured. To fulfill its mission, the Institute: Conducts research on mental disorders and the underlying basic science of brain and behavior. Supports research on these topics at research settings throughout the United States and the world. Collects, analyzes, and disseminates information on the causes, occurrence, and treatment of mental illnesses.
