December 8, 2005 Mental Health Subcommittee Report to the Medical Assistance Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee The mental health subcommittee of the Iowa Medical Assistance Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee released their recommendations to the Iowa legislature. The PT committee presented several broad strategies to control Medicaid psychotropic drug costs: Eliminate all or part of the Mental Health exemption. Require prior authorization for specific clinical situations. Maintain the current exemptions, but target specific practitioners to control prescribing practices.
