On March 9, 2015, the federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced plans to speed up nationwide deployment of a tool to review opioid therapy to reduce adverse effects and overuse of opioid pain medications. The tool, referred to as the Opioid Therapy Risk Report, will be used by staff in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) with veterans using high doses of opioids or with medical risk factors that put them at an increased risk of complications from opioid medications.
