U.S. Department Of Justice Report & Recommendations Concerning The Use Of Restrictive Housing In American Prisons

In July 2015, the President asked the Attorney General to review the “overuse of solitary confinement across American prisons.” The Department of Justice (DOJ) reviewed how, when, and why correctional facilities isolate some inmates from the general population. The DOJ then developed strategies for safely reducing the use of restrictive housing throughout the criminal justice system. The strategies and more than 50 guiding principles are intended for use at the federal, state, and local level, with specific recommendations for policies the BOP can implement for federal prisons.
