Proposed Rule: Medication Assisted Treatment For Opioid Use Disorders

On March 30, 2016, the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a proposed rule that doubles the number of consumers receiving buprenorphine treatment for opioid addiction who can be supervised by a trained physician holding a buprenorphine waiver. The current maximum is 100 consumers per waivered physician after the first waiver year. The proposal would increase the maximum to 200 consumers for qualified physicians with an active waiver who possess subspecialty board certification in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry, or who practice in a qualified practice setting.
