On June 27, 2016, the California governor approved Senate Bill Number 843 to grant a defendant six peremptory challenges in a criminal case if the offense charged is punishable with a maximum term of imprisonment of one year or less. The bill would also reduce the number of peremptory challenges that may be exercised separately by a defendant who is jointly tried from four to two in cases in which the maximum term of imprisonment is one year or less . . .
