Medicare ACOs: The Changing Landscape
The number of ACOs participating in Medicare ACO models have increased overall from a total of 150 ACOs in 2012 when the programs first started, to 460 ACOs in 2016. This is an increase of more than 200%. Although organizations have gained experienced in running the ACO model over the last five years, the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) Track One model (the model with the least amount of risk) remains the dominant and most popular program, even with the addition of the MSSP Track Three and Next Generation ACO model.
