On January 24, 2013, the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released this report to Congress on the nation's substance abuse and mental health workforce issues. The report covers the behavioral health workforce in its entirety because many data sources (including those funded by HRSA’s Bureau of Health Professions and the Department of Labor) and programs report by profession or discipline rather than population served (e.g., social workers, psychologists, and counselors), whether providing prevention services or treatment and whether serving persons with substance use disorders, mental health conditions, or both . . .
