November 1, 2009 Intel's Digital Health Group debuted the Intel Reader, a Linux-based hand-held device that scans text and converts it to speech. The device costs about $1,500, weighs about one pound, and is about the size of a paperback book; it comes with earphones for private listening and operates on rechargeable batteries.
