On July 15, 2017, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality released this report on consumer residence characteristics of opioid-related inpatient stays and emergency department visits - nationally and by state - for 2014. The report found that from 2005 to 2014 in the United States, large central metropolitan areas had the highest rate of opioid related inpatient stays, while small metropolitan areas had the highest increase in rate for opioid hospitalizations.
