WellCare Health Plans To Buy Meridian Health Plan For $2.5 Billion, Boosting Its Medicaid Membership

Wellcare Health Plans (WellCare) recently announced it is acquiring Medicaid insurer Meridian Health Plan (Meridian). The $2.5 billion purchase is expected to close by the end of 2018.

According to statements from WellCare, the company anticipates that the acquisition will strengthen its Medicaid business by raising its membership throughout numerous states. WellCare will also be able to add MeridianRx to its portfolio, Meridian’s in-house pharmacy benefit manager. Additionally, WellCare has remarked that the purchase will provide it with additional insights into managing pharmacy costs and improving quality through the integration of pharmacy and medical care.
