January 12, 2011 Eleven Florida counties that received grants to implement a variety of public-private projects to reduce the number of people with mental illness in the criminal justice system are reporting promising results after three years. Since the projects started in 2007, the counties have reported reduced demand on county jails and emergency rooms, reduced the incidence of homelessness, and reduced other related health care costs for persons in need of substance abuse treatment and mental health care.
