March 22, 2011 The federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) reviewed national prevalence data on elder abuse reported by four studies released between 1988 and 2009. The most recent estimated that 14.1% of non-institutionalized older adults had experienced physical, psychological, or sexual abuse; or financial exploitation during the last 12 months. The GAO said the full extent of elder abuse is likely underestimated because the most recent study excluded older adults with high cognitive impairment. Download the Report . . .
