In 2010, the authors estimated the cost of pharmacy waste at $403 billion, stemming from $258 billion due to consumer failure to take medications as prescribed , $88.3 billion due to consumer use of higher cost or inefficient prescription purchasing channels, and $56.7 billion due to prescriptions for brand name medications that offer no therapeutic benefit over a generic.
