Valuing the Invaluable: The Growing Contributions and Costs of Family Caregiving, 2011 Update
June 23, 2011 The AARP Public Policy Institute estimated the time commitment and economic value of unpaid family caregiving in 2009. The average adult family caregiver spends about 18 hours per week helping a family member perform activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, or coordinating care and advocating for their family member. Nearly two-thirds of family caregivers are women; 80% are caring for a relative of friend age 50 years or older. The value of unpaid caregiving was estimated at $450 billion.
