October 6, 2011 In 2005, the Protection and Advocacy for People with Disabilities (PAPD) filed a class action lawsuit against the South Carolina Department of Corrections. In the lawsuit, PAPD argues that the South Carolina DOC has failed for many years,and through different administrations, to provide reasonably adequate mental treatment to inmates suffering from serious mental illness while in custody.
