Of the estimated 333 million individuals in the United States in 2022 (78.3% of whom are age 18 years or older), approximately 27 million adults (8%) have a diagnosis of serious mental illness (SMI). In 2016, 18.0 million adults had a diagnosis of SMI – representing 7% of the population.
