As of 2021, commercial accountable care organizations (ACOs) operated in 43 states (up from 41 states in 2016). Of those states, OPEN MINDS conducted analysis on data publicly available on commercial ACOs within 38 states. Excluded from analysis were 59 ACOs across 28 states. States not included in analysis, due to no public data on commercial ACO contracting available, include Idaho, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, and North Dakota.
