Pennsylvania’s UPMC, Pittsburgh Stake Positions For Court Fight On Nonprofit Status
Circle Connections: Mergers & Acquisitions Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has announced the city is challenging the nonprofit status of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the region's largest employer with widespread holdings on which it pays no property taxes. UPMC will likely have to meet the HUP (hospital utilization project) test. HUP is a five-point test that the state Supreme Court reemphasized in a landmark ruling last year.
