To continue to build one of the leading addiction recovery centers in the country, Wellbridge Addiction Treatment and Research (Wellbridge) announced it has selected Harshal Kirane, M.D. as its Medical Director. Wellbridge is a joint venture of Northwell Health, the largest health care provider organization in New York state, and Engel Burman, a full-service real estate firm and one of the largest developers of senior housing in New York State.
Dr. Kirane currently serves as the Director of Addiction Services at Staten Island University Hospital as well as an Assistant Professor at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He joins Wellbridge as it prepares to open a new 80-bed center on 40 acres in Calverton, New York in the fall. With a focus on accelerating the translation of basic science discoveries into real-time, actionable addiction treatment, Wellbridge will be one of the first facilities to incorporate an onsite research center. Wellbridge has also been adding a wide range of additional positions to the organization including business development, finance, project management, and marketing.
Dr. Kirane completed a Bachelor of Science with honors at Texas Tech University and obtained his medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School (UT Southwestern). He completed his psychiatry residency along with a research fellowship in brain imaging at UT Southwestern. Subsequently, Dr. Kirane moved to New York City to pursue an addiction psychiatry fellowship at New York University. He is board-certified in general and addiction psychiatry, and was named a ”Staten Island Health Hero” by the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation in 2018.
Wellbridge will be an epicenter for the study and treatment of addiction. Its focus is to advance the scientific and medical understanding of addiction, and incorporate research and treatment into one setting for quality care and improved outcomes. Wellbridge will work with and research a diverse group of health care consumers and treatment settings with the ultimate goal of developing and incubating innovative treatment models based on the integration of clinical care, scientific research, and academic studies. Another key area of focus is the development of outpatient and innovative technology resources to provide consumers with a continuum of care that will help them achieve a life of sobriety.
