Centene To Buy Managed Care Provider Organization WellCare

Centene recently announced it is acquiring managed care provider organization WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (WellCare). WellCare focuses exclusively on providing government-sponsored managed care services—primarily through Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, and Medicare Prescription drug Plans—to families, children, seniors, and individuals with complex medical needs.

The more than $15 billion transaction will not only expand Centene into the government insurance plan market, but will also will result in an organization whose drug spend is approximately $30 billion. The two organizations combined will also serve 22 million consumers in government-sponsored health programs across all 50 states.
