Florida Hospitals’ Opioid Case Against Retail Pharmacy Chains Results In Mistrial

A lawsuit filed by 16 Florida hospitals against retail pharmacies operated by Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens resulted in a mistrial because jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict, according to local news reports. The case is Florida Health Sciences Center, North Broward Hospital District, et al., v. CVS, Walmart, and Walgreens. It was filed in 2019 in the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit of Florida. The jury trial started on September 22, 2025.

The plaintiffs accused the pharmacy chains of failing to control the volume of opioids dispensed, which resulted in raising costs for the hospitals due to injuries and unreimbursed care . . .
