Pennsylvania’s Hamburg State Center To Close; Residents Transitioned To Community

The 154-acre Hamburg State Center campus for people with intellectual disabilities will close in alignment with research showing that people with intellectual disabilities function better when living in the community. It comes as part of Governor Tom Wolf's commitment to serve more people in the community, reduce reliance on institutional care, and improve access to home- and community-based services for Pennsylvania residents. The closure is expected to lower the cost of the care to the state, as community-based care costs less than facility care.
