Maryland Department Of Health Direct Care Workers Win Nearly $600,000 Settlement In Overtime Pay Dispute   

The Maryland Department Of Health acknowledged it circumvented overtime pay laws, and the state agreed to pay settlements totaling almost $600,000 to dozens of workers at state facilities for people with mental health or developmental disabilities. The pay discrepancy was uncovered by a union for state workers in 2022.  

The AFSCME union brought the allegations to the attention of the state that year. More than 40 Maryland employees were underpaid, according to the union. They worked at facilities including psychiatric hospitals for children and adults, as well as at facilities for people with developmental disabilities.
