Massachusetts Governor Proposes Closing A Mental Health Center & A Pediatric Rehabilitation Hospital
In the state’s 2026 budget proposal, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy presented plans to close Pocasset Mental Health Center in Bourne and Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital in Canton. Both facilities are operated by the state.
Pocasset Mental Health Center, also called the Cape Cod & Islands Community Mental Health Center, is a 16-bed psychiatric hospital. It is run by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH). The facility provides short-term inpatient stabilization for adults. In addition to closing this facility, the governor’s budget proposes halving the number of DMH case managers, reducing staff from 340 to 170.
