SAMHSA Changing How The Agency Evaluates Evidence-Based Programs

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently announced that it will be shutting down its evidence-based practices (EBPs) database, the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices (NREPP). For the last 20 years, the database has served as a resource for provider organizations looking for federally-approved evidence-based treatments for mental health and addiction disorders.

SAMHSA cited a poor search-term system, insufficient evidence for some practices, and bias towards individual interventions as primary reasons for the decision. Taking over evaluation responsibilities will be SAMHSA’s new National Mental Health and Substance Use Policy . . .
