The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) recently announced that since implementing its Blue Distinction Total Care program, it has outperformed 96% of industry quality measures in key health care quality and consumer health metrics.
The Total Care program utilizes data sharing to create health care that is more effective and affordable, as well as improve care coordination, management, and monitoring. Another key aspect of the program is that it is value-based, meaning that it emphasizes quality of care over quantity of services provided. Since its launch in 2015, the program has yielded improvements in the management of chronic chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, the program has resulted in fewer emergency department (ED) visits, better HbA1c testing for individuals with diabetes, better medication adherence for individuals with cardiovascular disease, and a decrease in hospitalizations year-over-year.
Since 1929, Blue Cross Blue Shield companies have provided health care coverage to consumers. In every ZIP code, Blue Cross Blue Shield offers a personalized approach to health care based on the needs of the communities where their members live and work.
