State Licensure of Freestanding Behavioral Health Facilities Varies

OPEN MINDS The Behavioral Health & Social Service Industry Analyst Industry News States licensure requirements for freestanding behavioral health facilities is quite variable, according to a report released by the General Accounting Office in January, 1990. Alcohol and drug abuse facilities are located in all 50 states. Forty-two of those states require licensing of these facilities and have quality assurance requirements. Ambulatory psychiatric centers exist in 42 states, but only 20 states require licensure. Of these requiring licensure, 18 have quality assurance requirements. Pain control centers and specialized rehabilitation centers are located in only 18 and 24 states, respectively . . .
