OPEN MINDS The Behavioral Health & Social Service Industry Analyst Industry Statistic Inpatient and outpatient behavioral health utilization varies widely by geographic area in traditional indemnity (non-managed) health benefit plans, according to a new OPEN MINDS study. An analysis of adjustments for demographic factors, such as age of beneficiaries, didnt account for the dramatic differences noted between the geographic areas. The study was conducted using 1987 CHAMPUS utilization for ten CHAMPUS catchment areas. Catchment areas under CHAMPUS are generally defined by proximity to a military base hospital.
