The necessity of using DSM-III or ICD-9-CM coding for behavioral health treatment varies by insurance company, according to a recently- published report entitled Reimbursement Strategies. According to the report, insurance companies that will accept either DSM-III or ICD-9-CM include Allstate, American General, GEHA, Provident, Prudential, State Farm and Travelers. CIGNA and Employers of Wausau prefer DSM-III. CHAMPUS requires both codes on inpatient claims and requires ICD-9-CM on outpatient claims. </p . . .
