An earlier edition of OPEN MINDS (May, 1988) reported that the Boston metropolitan area had the highest concentration of psychiatrists in patient care at approximately 30.5 per 100,000 population. The Washington, D. C. area is a somewhat distant second at 26.2 per 100,000. But, further analysis by OPEN MINDS has revealed significant variations in the concentration of office-based and hospital-based psychiatrist populations.
