In a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, bioethicists at the University of Pennsylvania addressed this crisis of mental health care in the U.S. and proposed re-creating the long-term hospitalization through public hospitals – or more controversially phrased, “bringing back asylums” (see Improving Long-term Psychiatric Care – Bring Back the Asylum).
