OPEN MINDS Weekly News Wire Disability Support The risk of a major drug interaction is nearly one in 25, for older adults who use prescription and non-prescription medications together without medical supervision. Adults aged 75 to 85 years had the highest risk because 29% used at least five prescription medications. Among prescription medication users, 46% also used an over-the-counter (OTC) medication, and 52% used a dietary supplement. Overall, four percent of individuals were potentially at-risk of having a major drug-drug interaction; half of these interactions involved the use of non-prescription medications.
