Nonemergency Medical Transportation Not Well Coordinated &Additional Federal Leadership Needed
In this report released in January 2015, the federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) presented findings of its review of 42 federal programs for nonemergency medical transportation (NEMT) services to assess the degree of coordination among the programs. The GAO found that many services were provided by multiple agencies for similar populations. Of the 42 programs reviewed, all the programs were operated by six agencies— Agriculture (1), Education (7), Health and Human Services (HHS) (21), Housing and Urban Development (6), Transportation (DOT) (4), and Veterans Affairs (VA) (3).
