On January 10, 2014, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a proposal to remove several classes of drugs from their Medicare Part D protected class status over the next few years – antidepressants and immunosuppressants in 2015 and antipsychotics in 2016. If a drug class is listed as protected, all Medicare Part D plans are required to keep “all or substantially all” drugs in that therapeutic class in their formulary.
