Florida Senate Bill 2038 of 2012, to Authorize Privatizing State Prisons
January 18, 2012
Florida state senator J.D Alexander proposed Bill (SB) 2038 that sought to authorize privatization of state prisons in Florida. Under this bill, 14, 000 inmates in 24 state-run prisons and work camps would have been moved out and 3, 500 state workers would lose their jobs. After weeks of intense lobgying, the bill was voted on on February 14, 2012. This bill narrowly failed to pass (21-19).
