Estimating the Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Conditions in Adults: Extending the UK 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey

This British study analyzed the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among people with learning disabilities. They found that ASD affected about 30% of this population,  regardless of whether they lived in communal facilities or private homes. Previous research in Britain had estimated the population prevalence of ASD among adults at 1%, but that estimate had excluded adults with learning disabilities.  By including this population, the researchers estimated the prevalence of autism in the UK at 1.1%.
