Veterans Health Administration Statement To House Committee On Veterans’ Affairs About Veterans Mental Health Services

Robert A. Petzel, M.D., the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Under Secretary for Health, discussed the VHA's progress at improving mental health capacity. He noted that the VHA has completed hiring and training of staff to increase capacity of the multi-platform Veterans Crisis Line by 50%, and has started hiring and training 800 peer specialists. In addition to this hiring initiative, the VHA is also expanding veterans’ access to mental health care by offering enhanced services, longer clinic hours, and increasing its use of telemental health capability to deliver services.
