ASPE Issue Brief: Affordable Care Act Will Expand Mental Health & Substance Use Disorder Benefits & Parity Protections For 62 Million Americans

Researchers with the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) of the federal Department of Health and Human Services estimated the impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 essential health benefits provisions at full implementation. The law goes into effect on January 1, 2014, it affects on individuals currently enrolled in individual health plans, individuals enrolled in small group plans, and uninsured individuals. The researchers estimate that about 62 million Americans will have expanded access to behavioral health services through their health insurance plan.
