February 28, 2013
The federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released new delineations for metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, which are used by the U.S. Census Bureau and other federal agencies for collecting, tabulating, and publishing federal statistics. Some federal agencies use the delineations in non-statistical programs to determine eligibilty, for example, identifying rural Health Professional Shortage Areas. Medicare uses the rural designation and Health Professional Shortage Areas to determine beneficiary eligiblity for telehealth services.
