For this study released in March 2016, researchers Kevin C. Heslin, Ph.D., and Anne Elixhauser, Ph.D., analyzed data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) 2012 Kids' Inpatient Database (KID). The KID is a nationwide database of hospital inpatient stays, with hospital use, outcomes, and charges, to facilitate study of children's use of hospital services in the United States. The KID includes a sample of discharges from all community, non-rehabilitation hospitals in states participating in HCUP.
