An estimated 75,000 residents of Massachusetts have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and the state’s current service array has gaps, according to the legislatively appointed Massachusetts Autism Commission. To assess demand for autism services and the adequacy of the current service array, the Commission first estimated the potential number of people with autism as follows: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated autism prevalence at 1.1%; therefore, based on the U.S. Census Bureau population estimate of 6.6 million Massachusetts residents, there are 75,000 residents with an ASD.
