Florida SB 1322 Of 2016: Juvenile Detention Cost Sharing With Counties
On March 29, 2016, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed legislation that equalizes how the state and counties share the costs of juvenile detention. Previously between 2009 and 2013 the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) charged most counties 75% of the daily cost of housing pre-disposition juveniles at a regional facility operated by the DJJ. In 2014, in a compromise to address complaints from the counties, the cost sharing was adjusted, so that the counties paid 57%. The legislation, Florida Senate Bill (SB) 1322, splits the costs 50-50.
