April, 2009 The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA's) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) released in April 2009 a new report in its Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) series entitled, "TIP 48: Managing Depressive Symptoms in Substance Abuse Clients During Early Recovery." TIPs are best-practices guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorders. TIP 48 addresses answers that substance abuse treatment counselors need when working with clients with depressive symptoms and substance use disorders, including counseling approaches; clinical settings; cultural concerns; counselor roles and responsibilities; screening and assessment; treatment planning and processes; and continuing care . . .
