Alcohol Treatment: Need, Utilization, and Barriers
April 9, 2009 The Office of Applied Studies at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration released this analysis of 2007 data of the number of people over the age of 12 who needed treatment for an alcohol use problem, the number that perceived a need for treatment, and the number that actually received treatment. The researchers said 7.8% of persons aged 12 or older (an estimated 19.3 million persons) needed treatment for an alcohol problem in the past year. However, 87.4% of individuals who needed treatment neither received it nor perceived the need for it . . .
