DOJ Statement of Interest in Lane v. Kitzhaber, Regarding ADA And Sheltered Workshops

On April 20, 2012, the federal Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a statement of interest file an opinion brief siding with the plaintiffs in an Oregon lawsuit alleging that use of sheltered workshops violates the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). The lawsuit, Lane v. Kitzhaber, was filed in U.S. District Court on January 25, 2012 on behalf of more than 2,300 state residents with disabilities who work in sheltered workshops. These workshops employ only individuals with disabilities and typically pay less than the state minimum wage.
