Computerized, Previsit Self-Assessment Enhances Communication Between Providers and Patients With Mental Illness

A computer-assisted pre-visit patient self-assessment system tested the Veterans Administration (VA) improved communication between patients with severe mental illness and the professionals treating them. By reviewing the patientÂ’s responses, the treating professionals had a better understanding of the patientÂ’s current status and were able to routinely monitor whether or not the treatment and care plan were working as expected. The system was developed by researchers affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles and the VA Desert Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center.
