May  2006 Opiate-Related Drug Misuse Deaths in Six States: 2003 The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) monitors drug misuse deaths. Six states: Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Utah, and Vermont participated in the DAWN drug misuse monitoring effort. According to reports from these states submitted by medical examiners, in 2003, in five of the six states, methadone-related opiate misuse deaths outnumbered those implicating oxycodone or hydrocodone, the exception was Vermont which reported a higher rate of deaths involving oxycodone.
